Jacob Koppel Sandler
Jacob Koppel Sandler was a Jewish-Russian-American composer, pianist, and choral director, best known for his contributions to Yiddish theatre music and early tango compositions with Jewish influences.
Life
Jacob Sandler was born in 1853 in Biała Cerkiew, in present-day Ukraine. He emigrated to the United States in 1888, where he became a central figure in the emerging Yiddish theater scene in New York. Sandler worked as a synagogue choirmaster and wrote extensively for the stage.
He died in 1931.
Work
Sandler's most famous composition is Eili, Eili, originally composed for the operetta Bracha oder der jüdische König von Polen für eine Nacht (1896). Though often mistaken for a folk song, the piece is generally attributed to Sandler as its original composer.
He also composed tango songs with Yiddish lyrics, combining the rhythmic sensuality of Argentine tango with the melodic and lyrical character of Jewish music traditions.
