Chromatics refers to the use of tones that lie outside the main notes of a given key (the diatonic scale). These added tones, usually separated by semitones (half steps), create color, tension, and emotional depth in musical expression.

The term comes from the Greek chroma (χρῶμα), meaning "color", highlighting its role in enriching musical language.

Common Uses

Chromatic notes are frequently used to:

• Transition smoothly between harmonies
• Create tension or anticipation
• Enrich melodic and harmonic material

In tonal music, chromaticism is often ornamental. In 20th-century and contemporary music, it may become structural.
