The Orquesta Nacional de Música Argentina "Juan de Dios Filiberto" was originally founded in 1932 by composer Juan de Dios Filiberto under the name Orquesta Porteña. Its mission was — and continues to be — the interpretation and dissemination of works by Argentine composers.

In 1948, the orchestra was incorporated into the national structure, renamed Orquesta Nacional de Música Argentina, and expanded from 14 to 40 members. It established its residence at the Teatro Nacional Cervantes in Buenos Aires.

Following a presidential decree in 1973, its current statutes were defined and its official name became Orquesta Nacional de Música Argentina "Juan de Dios Filiberto", honoring its founder, who had passed away on 11 November 1964.

The orchestra has maintained an extensive artistic presence both nationally and internationally, touring throughout Latin America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Its repertoire and activities remain central to the cultural representation of Argentine music.
