Malevaje
Malevaje is a Spanish tango group founded in Madrid in 1984, during the cultural wave known as the Movida Madrileña. It was led by vocalist and lyricist Antonio Bartrina, with original members including Fernando Gilabert (contrabass), Ramón Godes (guitar), and Edi Clavo (drums). The group's name was inspired by the classic tango Malevaje by Juan De Dios Filiberto. Their first live performance took place on 14 February 1984 at El Salero in Madrid.
Initially dedicated to interpreting traditional tango, Malevaje later incorporated elements from milonga, habanera, rumba criolla, and candombe, blending innovation with respect for tango’s roots. Over nearly four decades, the group recorded over a dozen albums including Tangos (1985), Margot (1986), Arriba los corazones (1987), Con su permiso, Don Carlos (1996), and 30 años de tangos (2017).
They performed widely in Spain and internationally, including appearances at Le Printemps de Bourges and the Semana Internacional de Estrasburgo. In recognition of his contribution to tango, Antonio Bartrina received the Orden del Porteño from the Asociación Gardeliana Argentina in 2006.
As of 2022, the group continues with Bartrina on vocals, Gilabert on contrabass, and Fernando Giardini on bandoneón and guitar. Recent projects such as Vino Amargo reflect their continued evolution and commitment to revitalizing tango for new generations.
