The major scale is a seven-note Diatonic Scale defined by the interval pattern:

    • Whole – Whole – Half – Whole – Whole – Whole – Half**

This pattern gives the major scale its distinct, bright character and forms the foundation of Western tonal harmony.

Example

  • C Major: C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C

Characteristics

  • Root of functional harmony (tonic–dominant–subdominant)
  • Basis of most classical, folk, and popular Western music
  • All modes except Locrian and Aeolian are variations of the major scale
