The minor scale is a type of Diatonic Scale that produces a more melancholic or introspective sound compared to the Major Scale. There are three primary forms:

Types

  • Natural Minor: W–H–W–W–H–W–W (e.g., A – B – C – D – E – F – G – A)
  • Harmonic Minor: Natural minor + raised 7th
  • Melodic Minor: Natural minor + raised 6th and 7th (ascending only)

Characteristics

  • Used widely in classical, folk, and tango music
  • Forms the basis for minor-key harmony
  • More flexible than major scale due to variations in the 6th and 7th degrees
