The Dorian mode is a seven-note scale with the interval pattern:

    • W–H–W–W–W–H–W**

It is similar to the Natural Minor Scale but has a raised 6th, giving it a slightly brighter and more flexible quality.

Example

  • D Dorian: D – E – F – G – A – B – C – D

Use

  • Common in jazz, folk, and medieval music
  • Favored in tango for its minor yet mobile character
