The major scale is a seven-note Diatonic Scale defined by the interval pattern:
- Whole – Whole – Half – Whole – Whole – Whole – Half**
This pattern gives the major scale its distinct, bright character and forms the foundation of Western tonal harmony.

Characteristics
- Root of functional harmony (tonic–dominant–subdominant)
- Basis of most classical, folk, and popular Western music
- All modes except Locrian and Aeolian are variations of the major scale
