Eduardo Del Piano was a bandoneonist, arranger, and orchestra leader whose career spanned over three decades and more than twenty ensembles. Recognized for his refined technique and musical sensibility, Del Piano played a vital role in shaping the tango orchestral sound of the 1940s and 1950s. He was eventually elected president of the Asociación Bandoneonística Argentina, with Astor Piazzolla serving as honorary president.
His musical journey began in 1929 with the Silvestri-Pugliesi group in his neighborhood of Barracas and included performances with many major tango figures such as Aníbal Arias, Ricardo Ruiz, and Mario Canaro. He also worked with orchestras led by Osvaldo Fresedo, Ángel D’Agostino, and Miguel Caló. His tenure with D’Agostino saw the creation of memorable arrangements, including “A pan y agua” and “El cornetín del tranvía,” and solidified his partnership with singer Ángel Vargas. Del Piano composed the iconic tango “Esta noche en Buenos Aires,” which became a classic thanks to Vargas’s interpretation.
In 1947, Del Piano founded his own orchestra, debuting alongside Vargas and introducing the singer as “El Ruiseñor de las calles porteñas.” They recorded 20 tracks together before parting ways in 1950. Del Piano’s orchestra featured several singers including Mario Bustos, Héctor De Rosas, and Adolfo Rivas. The group remained active until 1958, when changing musical trends led Del Piano to retire temporarily from tango to run a family-owned perfume store.
Though his recordings were scattered and not compiled during his lifetime, Del Piano remained active in smaller ensembles into his later years, accompanying singers like Osvaldo Ribó and Carlos Danel. He passed away unexpectedly, still carrying the regret that his discographic legacy had not been properly preserved.
